Yamas

There are 5 Yamas covering moral behaviour towards others.

  • Ahimsa (non violence)

No harm to each other within the class (especially useful in partner work). This is also covered within the sessions on anger management and negative thoughts.

  • Satya (Truthfulness)

Discussing the importance of truthfulness, when is it ok to tell a ‘little white lie’ and the consequences of lying. There is a lesson plan around Satya and the goddess Durga.

  • Asteya (non stealing/non envy)

The mat being a space each for them to use and they should not steal each other’s mats or other equipment. But also to not be jealous of each other’s possessions so for example ask everyone to switch positions. Useful in the lesson plan on personal space.

  • Brahmacharya (self control)

Controlling our energy and using it wisely for example having enough energy to complete the class. Again useful during sessions on anger mamangement and relating self control also to our feelings, thoughts and actions. This can be linked with discussions around prana, mudras and badhas too.

  • Aparigraha (non greed)

Appreciating what we have and thankfulness. From simply being thankful for coming together for the session to taking this deeper into what we are thankful for and even keeping a diary every day for a week of what we are thankful for and saying these out loud before bed, thankfulness can become part of routine and is really helpful at the difficult teenage stage of life where it can seem the world is against you.
