Changes in Puberty

Young people go through huge physical and mental changes between approximately 10 and 14 for girls and 12 and 16 for boys. It is normal for puberty to begin anywhere between 8 and 14 and it can take up to 4 years for puberty to be complete. This is the reason why an activity like yoga and mindfulness can be really beneficial, to help them to cope with these changes.
Mood changes are really common, they are dealing with huge changes in their bodies feeling and appearance. They also may feel very self concious because of these changes and new issues such as body odour that they haven’t experienced before. They may experience low self esteem, agression and depression.
For both boys and girls, changes in hormones cause puberty to begin. Gonadotrophin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) is produced by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This hormone stimulates the pituitary gland to release two hormones, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). These hormones travel through the blood to the testicles and ovaries. This is the start of puberty.
