Niyamas
Again there are 5 Niyamas, these concern moral behaviour but towards the self.
- Saucha (cleanliness of body and mind)
Using positive thoughts and affirmations in class, explaining the importance of exercise and healthy eating and the positive effects of yoga on the body. There is a lesson plan on positive and negative thoughts.
- Santosha (contentment)
Appreciating what we have, enjoying the yoga practice.
- Tapas (effort, perseverance and consistency)
‘if at first you don’t succeed, try try again’ the yoga poses need practice to perfect and the perfection is the reward. Giving the young people challenges to try at home too and show you their progress in class over the weeks is a great way to do this.
- Svadhyaya (self awareness)
Listening to our bodies and minds. Recognising when we can do more and when we are pushing too hard. Encourage the students to focus during poses to find out how it makes their bodies feel. The use of mindfulness during yoga classes can also help to increase self awareness.
- Ishvara (the greater good)
Listening to others and thinking of their feelings, accepting others opinions. Another useful one for partner work but also during mat chats. Make sure they are respectful to each other. A good one to discuss at the beginning of a term to get across the idea of being respectful during class.
