Breathing and Movement

How to use the breath in different poses:

  • Opening or lifting the chest e.g. bhujangasana – inhale. A good opportunity to inhale more deeply.
  • Forward bends e.g. forward fold – exhale. Exhaling allows the top half of the body to meet the lower half as there is less mass in the way when the lungs are emptied.
  • Twists e.g. parivtta trikonosana (revolved triangle) – inhale as you sit or stand tall and extend the spine and exhale on the actual twist. This allows the rib cage to twist further.
