Asanas and Pranayamas

The Limbs that people associate most with yoga.

Ensure you are using the Sanskrit terminology during Minds classes, we talk about practicing our Asanas rather than poses and we always practice pranayama at the beginning of class still and this is what we refer to it as.

You could talk to the students about the root of these names to help them to understand what we are trying to achieve:

Asana – means a steady, comfortable posture and comes originally from the word meaning a seat, but has grown to mean all poses used.

Pranayama – the breath is known as Prana or vital force. ‘Pra’ meaning ‘to fill’ is added to the root word, ‘an’ (‘to breathe’ or ‘to live’) creating the new meaning ‘the life that fills with the breath’.

The first lesson taught to new students is all around the breath and how we use it in class. Another big difference from Juniors is that we now use our pranayama at the same time as an asana to help to achieve it and we also use pranayama to move from one asana to another in a vinyasa flow.
