Splitting Classes by Age
Pre-School (Ages 3-5)
Delivering classes to children aged 3-5 opens up a new revenue stream with delivering Pre-schooler classes privately and also within Nursery and Preschool settings.
Classes at this age should be a bridge between Toddlers and Juniors. They will struggle to be engaged enough in a toddler class and they are too big for the parents to be doing lifts and flips. But equally they are too young for a full Juniors class with full visualisations and following long stories with poses.
The children should be attempting the yoga poses unaided, especially in a nursery as there will not be a 1:1 ratio of adults and children. However, you can still use songs from the toddler classes to keep the classes fun and props such as the parachute which at this age could include games such as running to the colour to increase the educational content. Relaxation should definitely still be included and unlike Toddlers, they should be encouraged to lie down.
Kids (Ages 4-7 and Ages 8-11)
In the Junior classes, children should be split as ages 4-7 and ages 8-12 where possible as they will be capable of different things physically and have different levels of concentration. When they are in the middle of these ages, get information from the parents on their attention span etc. and make a decision from there, as a ‘young’ 8 year old may be better in the younger class and an ‘older’ 7 year old in the older class for example.
When working in schools however you will be working with ages based on classes, so there will be some cross over within this age bracket. it is helpful here to work within the Key Stage and then tailor lessons to suit a specific class. When working with the children at the upper end of this age group you can challenge pupils with much more challenging poses, and some short yoga flows too.
Another option for this age bracket would be to offer holiday camps where you can provide a full day of Yoga and activities. Or one off sessions to coincide with themes at different times of the year.
