Helping Children Feel Heard: Kalma Minds Celebrates World Mental Health Day

September 25, 2026National News

This October, Kalma Minds yoga and mindfulness classes will be heading into local schools to mark World Mental Health Day, with this year’s theme: “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”

For us, this theme feels incredibly important.

At Kalma Minds, we believe that supporting children’s mental health isn’t just about teaching them ways to feel calmer. It’s also about creating spaces where children feel safe to speak, listened to, valued and understood.

Throughout the day, each of our Kalma Minds sessions will have a special focus on listening and being heard. Through age-appropriate yoga, breathwork, mindfulness, partner activities and relaxation, we will explore what it means to share our thoughts and feelings, listen to others and recognise that every voice matters.

Creating space for every voice

Our sessions will encourage children to think about the different ways we communicate and how it feels when somebody genuinely listens to us.

Sometimes being heard means having the confidence to speak.

Sometimes it means knowing that it’s okay to ask for help.

Sometimes it means having someone sit beside us without judgement.

And sometimes, particularly for children who may find talking about their feelings difficult, being heard can happen through movement, creativity, breathing or simply having a quiet space to be.

Yoga and mindfulness give us lots of opportunities to explore these ideas in a way that feels accessible, playful and meaningful.

Through partner yoga, children will practise working together, communicating and listening to one another. Through breathwork and mindfulness, they will have the opportunity to pause, notice how they are feeling and connect with themselves. And through relaxation, they can experience some of the calming tools they can return to whenever they need them.

Real voices, real experiences

Every child experiences the world differently.

Their feelings, worries, experiences and ways of communicating are all unique. That’s why creating opportunities for children to express themselves and feel genuinely listened to is such an important part of supporting their wellbeing.

We want children to know that their feelings matter, their experiences matter and their voice matters.

We also want them to develop the confidence to listen to others with kindness and curiosity — recognising that someone else’s experience might be very different from their own.

Wellbeing tools for life

At Kalma Minds, we are passionate about giving children practical tools that they can take beyond the yoga mat and into everyday life.

A few mindful breaths before a difficult moment.

A grounding technique when emotions feel overwhelming.

A stretch or movement break when their bodies need to move.

A relaxation technique before bedtime.

Or simply remembering: I can pause. I can breathe. I can ask for help. I deserve to be heard.

These are small tools, but they can become valuable parts of a child’s wellbeing toolkit as they grow.

We feel privileged to be part of the conversation

We always feel privileged to be welcomed into schools and given the opportunity to support children’s wellbeing.

World Mental Health Day gives us another opportunity to have those important conversations and to remind children that looking after our mental health is just as important as looking after our physical health.

Most importantly, we hope our sessions leave children with the feeling that someone has listened, someone cares and their voice has value.

Because sometimes, real change starts with something very simple:

being heard.
