Teaching practices within Toddler Yoga Classes

Teaching yoga to mobile infants and toddlers can be challenging and there will be many times in which a lesson plan alone is not enough. Consideration should be given to the selection of props used in sessions, music, songs and language used. The personality of a teacher is a huge benefit in these classes and being able to keep the class engaged. This will also come with practice and time. You will gain confidence and begin to get to know your toddlers and parents, what works and what doesn’t. Using the element of surprise in classes with puppets, pompoms and parachutes can help to break it up. Remember toddlers and mobile infants will not always do what you would like them too. Reaching a milestone like crawling and walking is a huge development point and brings a whole new out-look on life for them, often in classes going with the flow and sitting back allowing it to be relaxed where toddlers and mobile infants join in as they like works much better.

Always try to encourage the parents to bring their children back into the circle to the mats to join in, but do encourage parents to relax and their little ones be free spirits and not to get stressed at them not joining in. Chances are they are still absorbing and many parents find they will show off a pose back home in their own environment away from distractions.
A mobile and toddler group can get pretty lively at times and there will be sessions where you will need extra presence to reiterate health and safety. Parents should be asked to pay particular attention. In rooms where you have a large space if you have a walking group make use of the space, you will find toddlers want to be off doing that too! In spaces where there are distractions try to cover over toys etc.
