Health and Safety In a toddler Yoga class

Toddler classes should taught and led by the teacher this means try not to use the demonstration doll! Demonstrations of stretches should be done by the teacher using themselves where they can or by using a parent and child. There can be occasions where teachers would ask for a volunteering child, once you get to know your children and parents you will learn which are forth coming. Due to safeguarding you should always ask a parents consent before handling their child. Ensure that all parents have signed any health and safety and photo permissions before you commence the class. Never assume a parent is OK for you to handle their children, ALWAYS ask first.

As with all yoga never force a stretch work with toddlers resistance. If a toddler doesn’t want to work with the stretch stop try again another time. Assure parents toddlers will join in when they want to, but encouragement should be given to them and parent participation a must. Classes numbers should be kept to around 12 in our experience this is a manageable amount of toddlers.  There may be instances where toddlers become distracted and become challenging and disruptive.  In such cases try and encourage parents to simply bring their children back to the group and to keep doing this.

As part of health and safety you may want to consider toddlers having no socks on.  There maybe occasions where they run around and this can be slippery when they have socks on. Keep your props away in bags out of reach of children.  Ensure you have checked your room for risks.  Accidents can happen and may find you must keep a closer eye on your mobile class! Risk assessments are an absolute must.
