Moving together to raise awareness of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

This September, we’re making movement matter with our Month of Movement, helping to raise awareness of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Throughout the month, we’ll be encouraging children, families, schools and communities to get moving in ways that are fun, positive and accessible to everyone. Whether it’s yoga, dancing, walking, stretching or simply being active together, every movement helps us shine a light on childhood cancer and show our support for children and families affected by it.

What is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and why is it so important?

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is observed worldwide every September, an annual event that began in 1990. Over the past 30 years, advancements in research and treatment have greatly improved survival rates for children with cancer. However, in that time the number of cases of childhood cancer has increased and remains at its highest levels today. In the UK, the incidence of childhood cancer has risen by 13% since the early 2000s. Approximately 4,200 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year, with around 120 of those living in the North East and Cumbria. Cancer remains the leading cause of non-accidental death for children aged one to 9 in the UK. Moreover, even if a child survives cancer, the disease can rob them of their childhood, hinder their education, and lead to long-term side effects from treatment.
Children’s Cancer North, has a mission is to make life better for children and young people with cancer by raising awareness, investing in ground breaking research, and delivering essential support to families during their challenging journey.
